"praCh Ly is the most authoritative voice in Khmai and Khmai-American rap.
( Dalama..."memoirs of the invisible war." ) not only shows his music taking on new
beats and new sounds from traditional and other sources.  The lyrics focus
have a new focus on all of the Cambodian tragedy from 1970 to the present.
Aware, furious, respectful, precise --- this is political writing at its finest.
Like Nelson Mandela had rapped when he was young."

* review by : Geoff Ryman - is an award winning author of 253 the world's first internet novel,
and the cult classics WAS and LUST. His most recent full-length novel,
The King's Last Song.
Some of the song is related, other directly to the ( praCh ) family past,
the aftermath of the Khmer Rouge. Other seem to be struggle with
the legacy of Pot Pot , other lyrics contemporary politics,
culture clash and what is currently happening in Cambodia…
its quite confrontational the lyrics,
“ look at me, I’m living proof of the future, Power to the people, therefore I declare war! “
His music, many way make it unique. The way he weave
traditional Khmer music with Hip Hop and Rap,….love the lyrics, love the music!

1960s and '70s.
She was part of a thriving
pop music
scene in Cambodia, music that was
influenced by
rhythm and blues and
rock and roll. She was a frequent singing
partner with
Sinn Sisamuth,
Cambodia's top male singer of the era.

U Sam Oeur

feature in DALAMA3 :
' a yet to be title song '

*- the song is about the invasion of the
KR and the evacuation of Phnom Penh '

U Sam Oeur grew up in a Cambodian farming
family. After studying in the US, he served in the
Cambodian government, becoming part of the
Cambodian delegation to the United Nations. When
Pol Pot assumed power in 1975, Oeur, along with his
wife and son, survived the killing fields while feigning
illiteracy in six forced-labor camps. A devout
Buddhist, Oeur is the author of the acclaimed
bilingual collection of poems Sacred Vows.
A devout Buddhist, he now lives in Texas where
he translates the poems of Walt Whitman into Khmer.

Sacred Vows
Reviews

"Like the beautiful lily that has its roots in mud,
the poetry in Sacred Vows is the voice of an
anguished heart emerging from the blood
and gore of violence. A book all peace
makers must read."
-Arun Gandhi,
M.K. Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence

" 'A blade of grass may support drops
of dew,' writes U Sam Oeur, 'not hunks
of shrapnel.' These lines conclude the poem,
'Nightmare,' in remembrance of the devastation
caused by the wars in Cambodia.
From 1975 to 1979, approximately 1.5 million
Cambodians died from execution,
disease, and starvation. . . .

"A graduate of the M.F.A. Program at the
Iowa Writer's Workshop in 1968,
Sam writes with a creative intensity that
produces beauty out of degradation.
His language is simple, direct and
unwavering in its convictions.

"The most-feared political groups-the
Khmer Rouge and the Vietnamese
Communists-are represented
by wild creatures in his poems.

If you went into the water, there were
crocodiles; on land, tigers stalked you;
in the woods, thorns in every thicket;
in the market, cops everywhere

"Cambodia's 'liberation' from the
Khmer Rouge only brought more enemies;
'free from tigers,' the 'Neo-Pol-Pot'
era is now 'facing crocodiles.' For Sam,
this meant his country was in a state
of wretchedness called 'Manuh
Terechhano'-a Cambodian Buddhist
term for a condition in which
people exist as beasts. Hopeful, though,
Sam desired 'Manuh Devo,' the enlightened
state in which people coexist
peacefully and exercise
compassion for each other.

"Sacred Vows is U Sam Oeur's stand against
despots and marauding invaders who would ravage
Cambodia and divest it of its cultural
life. Sacred Vows serves as both an
anguished lamentation over Cambodia's
genocidal past and a poignant
declaration of hope."

* He's not any song but will be helping with the

mini animation video that comes with the album

Bun Heang Ung is a remarkably talented
artist and animator. The sixty drawings that
accompanied his book, The Murderous Revolution
his real-life struggle to survive the Khmer Rouge
regime - are a vivid testimony of those tragic
times. Bun collaborated with Martin Stuart-Fox
to produce the book, which was first published
in 1985. In fact, his book was published on three
occasions. Bun recalls, "The old editions were
poor in quality. The first was published in
Sydney, second and third in Bangkok...and
of course in Cambodia it was by pirate publishing.
I was disappointed to see the book with poor
quality, I had put so much detail into every
drawing - I would like my drawing to tell the story
itself. You see when I arrived in Australia 26 years
ago, I had started to draw those toons from my
memories almost every night for 2 years, 90
drawings, 14 hours each..." Bun would love to r
e-publish his graphic recollections in a book titled,
Khmer Rouge and Its Evil Revolution; "I'm looking f
or a good publisher to put my drawings in a new
form with big size printing. Fingers crossed,
I'll find one."

Bun's animation work has appeared in films and
tv programmes in the past and he's returning to
it again, after much of the business had been
snapped up by Chinese and Indian animators
in recent times. He's also universally known for
his searingly satirical caricatures and cartoons,
having been a political cartoonist for the Far
Eastern Economic Review for a number of years.
However, it has a downside, as he's not been back
to his beloved Cambodia in recent years for safety
reasons, as he sees it, "I'm a very ugly black sheep
in Cambodia. However, I draw my toons every day
from my heart: Cambodia, My Home, My Soul,
My Heart." His own website, Sacrava Toons,
displays a wealth of his work at

"The Ray Charles of Cambodia,"
chapei dong vengung

Kung Nai, often called
"The Ray Charles of Cambodia,"
is one of the best-known and celebrated a
rtists in the  chapei tradition. Accompanied by his
own spirited strumming on the chapei dang weng
(a Cambodian long-necked lute), Kung Nai,
with his lively voice and tenacious word play,
regularly brings audiences to their feet with his gift
for improvising poetry and song. Now one of the few
surviving masters in the chapei tradition who studied
before the Khmer Rouge genocide in the late 1970's,
in which an estimated ninety percent of Cambodian artists
perished, Kung Nai continues to strive to promote
and teach this beloved art form.

Blinded by smallpox at the age of four,
Kung Nai began his studies on the chapei
at thirteen. Coming from a musical family,
he grew up around relatives who were masters
of playing traditional instruments, copying religious
manuscripts, chanting Buddhist texts, composing Khmer
poetry, and strumming the chapei dang weng.
In his youth, Kung Nai often faced ridicule from
his peers for his disability. Rather than being
disempowered by their prejudice, however,
Kung Nai sought to find a vocation that would
bring him independence and respect. The chapei,
whose sound had excited him from childhood,
turned out to be the perfect instrument for him.
After just two years of study, at the age of fifteen
Kung Nai began to perform professionally.
His reputation grew quickly, and he soon e
arned the nickname Kung "Handsome" Nai.

The chapei tradition reached its height in 1960's and
early 1970's as a result of the spread of radio and
audio recordings carrying the voices of famous
musicians across Cambodia. Originally, however,
the chapei tradition belonged [how about the
chapei musicians were like minstrel musicians, who
wandered itinerantly composing and performing
poetic tales to entertain and morally instruct young
and old alike. The most notable of these performers,
Phirum Ngoy, wrote poems to be sung accompanied
by chapei that are still studied in Cambodian schools
today. Kung Nai, while still sometimes performing
classical poems like those by Phirum Ngoy, is best
known from his incredible gift for improvisation
(akin to the ability of some hip hop artists to
"freestyle"), a prized skill he acquired after
studying poetry for nearly two decades.

During the Khmer Rouge genocide, Kung Nai,
like so many other Cambodians, was forced
to work for long hours with little food.
Unlike most of his fellow musicians, however,
Kung Nai was miraculously spared from the
regime's hideous attempts to wipe out intellectuals
and artists. Kung Nai has since performed
internationally in five countries, including Belgium,
France, Thailand, and Vietnam, once even
stopping to perform in Africa. His stage presence,
at once majestic and full of joy, continues to captivate
audiences wherever he performs. Even in his
sixties, his poetic gifts are stronger than ever,
and his stunning ability to weave the context of each
performance into his rhyming, imaginative
improvisations never fails to awe and entertain.
Master Kung Nai has thoroughly earned his place
as a precious gem in the crown jewel of
Khmer culture, and continues to be a source
of pride for Cambodians across the world.

About Vienna Ros

Vienna Ros is the voice of the American dream.
Blessed with a rich contralto, she was brought to the
states as an infant when her family escaped
the genocide known as "the killing fields" of Cambodia.
Overcoming incredible adversity, such as poverty
and racism, has shaped her into a rare and
resilient artist that courageously reveals all the
facets of her struggle as an hyphenated American.
The unexpected and unique timbre of her voice,
smoky, husky, emotionally raw, and
technically refined is refreshing and unforgettable.
It's power transcends the trappings of
genre and culture, resonating through social
barriers and defying expections. Her bold and
confident delivery combined with thoughtful lyrics
and haunting melodies invokes a
soulful sound, draped in honesty and shaded
with nuance. Her God-given talents could
only have been cultivated by freedom and unrestrained
passion making her a true American original.
